I want to join McKenzie Guardians
I have just sent $20 membership + donation. I travel to Oamaru regularly and return home to (Richmond – Nelson), often via the McKenzie country. I am 70 and I was brought up in Ch-Ch and picnicked and swam as a kid in the Selwyn River at Coes Ford and Whitecliffs. I have witnessed the rape of the Canterbury Plains thanks to Nick Smith, Ecan and the dairy farmers who have intensified – outright greed. What has occurred in your area is worse. I just about cry when I travel through, seeing the green pastures climb the hillsides and stretch right down to rivers like the Ahiriri. Following generations will not see these precious mountain grasses again. I have no hidden agenda – just sorry for kiwi generations (and tourists that follow me). I can appreciate why some pivot irrigation systems have been vandalised out of frustration (something I wouldn’t have the guts to do). I love the outdoors for what it delivers. If your organisation can do something to halt this intensification, there is a glimmer of hope that the remnants of the tussock can deliver some pleasure to those who value the back country. Please keep me informed so I can perhaps make a submission. If you think my comments are relevant, feel free to pass this on to those that make decisions.
